Coronado Plaza

VDLA was commissioned to design an expanded public space in front of the historic El Cordova Hotel and adjacent retail shops. The improvement provides opportunities for outdoor dining, pedestrian gatherings, tourist-oriented activities, and also serves to reduce excessive crosswalk lengths for pedestrians traversing the busy Orange Avenue. The renowned Hotel Del Coronado, known worldwide, stands just across the street. Within the new plaza, a central water feature takes center stage, exuding Mediterranean design influences. This stone and tile fountain is encircled by stone paving and shaded by a canopy of blossoming trees. The space exudes an “Old World” ambiance, with brick pathways, clay planter pots, and decorative iron railings enhancing its character. A variety of seating options are thoughtfully provided, including stone-capped seatwalls and freestanding benches.
