VDLA was selected by American Assets Trust to design a renovation of the landscape at the Solana Beach Corporate Center (SBCC) in Solana Beach, CA. The scope included an assessment of the existing conditions and preparation of design concepts for review, including renovation of all frontages along Stevens Avenue, San Rodolfo Drive, Academy Drive, and all of the on-structure planters. The existing landscape included turf grass planted in the right-of-way and along building frontages. The proposed concepts included removal of unusable turf areas, declining pine trees, and older hedges and plantings. The new landscape features a drought-tolerant plant palette with fruitless Olive trees, Marina Strawberry trees and colorful accents such as prostrate Bougainvillea, Orange Bulbine and Blue Chalk Sticks. The on-structure planters were changed out from older Queen Palms that were not performing well in favor of fruitless Olive trees. Vibrant Columnar Podocarpus trees were added to accent building entries. Lastly, a grove of Bronze Loquat trees and succulent plantings that are low maintenance and water conserving were added to the plaza.
