VDLA was an integral member of the design/build team that created an intriguing landscape design for a new energy efficient County library for the community of Fallbrook. The design includes a 2,800 square foot green roof, a ‘visual garden’ featuring desert themed landscape and sculptures, a ‘reading garden’ courtyard and perimeter landscaping. A ‘Poet’s Patio’ opens onto a public terrace featuring a serpentine stone seatwall by artist James Hubbell. A fence with a cross-buck design style complements the rural  agricultural motif expressed throughout the architecture. The landscape provides a stimulating and interesting environment, with a low-water use plant palette including succulents that provide a variety of textures and colors. Prior to beginning construction, the team went through a detailed public approval process including local interest groups and a local design review board. Issues successfully addressed included conserving or re-using existing boulders, sculptures and plantings from the old library, and providing a landscape & hardscape theme that was appropriate to the unique character of the Fallbrook community. The project has achieved LEED Silver certification, and received a People’s Choice Orchid Award at the 2011 San Diego Orchids & Onions Program.
