VDLA was commissioned to design an expanded public space in front of the historic El Cordova Hotel and adjacent retail shops, as part of the implementation of Coronado's Business Area Development Plan. The improvement provides opportunities for outdoor dining, pedestrian gatherings, tourist-oriented activities and also serves to reduce excessive crosswalk lengths traversing busy Orange Avenue. The internationally-renowned Hotel Del Coronado is across the street. Parking studies were performed to re-stripe local on-street parking with new angle-in and parallel spaces to accommodate the new plaza area. Centered in the new plaza is a formal water feature with a Mediterranean design influence. The stone and tile fountain is surrounded by stone paving and a canopy of flowering trees.  Brick paving, clay planter pots and decorative iron railings enhance the area with additional "Old World" character.  Ample seating is provided throughout, with a combination of stone-capped seatwalls and freestanding benches.
