Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Concert Venue

VDLA was commissioned to design a major renovation of the hotel grounds, including the renowned Concerts by the Bay outdoor venue. Primary design goals were to effectively identify the pedestrian entry to the concert amphitheater without detracting from normal hotel functions, and to create a buffer and transitional space between the amphitheater and the existing pool area. Another goal was to open up views from the concert seating area to the bayside marina, and to the Point Loma hills beyond. Other design elements included a water feature, bridge and theater-style fiber optic light strips in aisle walkways for safety and wayfinding during evening concert events. The renovation included streetscape improvements to Shelter Island Drive and improvements to the adjacent parking lots. The completed project results in an intimate concert setting under the stars, situated comfortably within a verdant landscape setting.
